A fast pH reading. A healthy vaginal environment is acidic (3.8–4.5); bacterial infections make it more alkaline. One colour change is enough to know whether something has moved out of range.

The distribution of causes is well known. What was missing was a way to know, in each individual case, which one is happening.
pH as a biomarker. Healthy vaginal pH is acidic, between 3.8 and 4.5. Bacterial vaginosis raises it, which allows for simple, non-invasive screening.
Specific antigens. The lateral flow assay detects markers of Candida albicans and Trichomonas vaginalis alongside indicators of bacterial dysbiosis.
Local validation. We surveyed 238 Colombian women: 82% have had symptoms at some point, and 73% of them had one or more infections in the past year.
